She is a painter and he is a restorer, but they are both conquered by the ortodox icon art. Lili Vladimirova has several solo performances in the country and abroad, and although he is a descendant icon painter, Emil Chushev has hardly shown his works in Bulgaria. Amidst the silence and the greenery, in complete seclusion with themselves, they preserve and sometimes resurrect the tradition of classical Orthodox Church painting.

Strictly adhering to the old technology, they carefully prepare the appropriate boards, lay linen, priming, grinding and then only first draw with a pencil, then engrave the drawing. Then they lay 8 layers of base on the places where the icon will be gilded and here comes the turn of 22 carat gold. Then the gold coating is polished with agate, insulated with varnish and then they paint the images with egg tempera. Finally, they apply several varnishes to preserve images and gilding for centuries to come.

Lili Vladimirova works mainly on Bulgarian Revival examples. Plots are often multifaceted and complex, but even with the images of a saint, the image has a rich, precise ornamentation that requires a special sense of detail. Lili Vladimirova’s icons are lively and festive. Reading the lives of the saints she portrays, she manages to convey to each expression a certain thorough psychology. Emil Chushev works mainly on Byzantine models, a tradition invariably linked to Bulgarian history. Their iconography is lighter, simpler. His images are quiet and humble. He does not start the icon by accident, the decision for each of his plot is provoked by chance, dream or thought.

From December 19 to February 4, you can take a closer look at the works of Lili Vladimirova and Emil Chushev and make sure that one of the most important traditions for the Bulgarian people is preserved responsibly and masterfully to this day.

Icons Lily Vladimirova and Emil Chushev December 19, 2019 – February 4, 2020 Opening Day: December 19 from 6:30 pm During the winter months – from December 19 to February 4, the Nuance Gallery invites you to the exhibition “Icons”, including works by Lily Vladimirova and Emil Chushev.
